    Tuesday, October 28, 2014

The West Virginia Geriatrics Society 10th Annual Scientific Assembly, “Care Across the Continuum: One Family’s Journey” was held on September 17, 2014 at the University of Charleston.    This year’s Assembly was designed for healthcare providers and others interested in learning about various levels of medical care provided to older adults with complex medical conditions.  Sessions addressed an array of the most current clinical, programmatic and policy issues facing providers, patients, and family caregivers. Attendees received meaningful information and tools to incorporate into their own work in caring for older adults in preventive, acute, post-acute, long-term care, and end-of-life settings.  Each session incorporated segments from a video case study, “Frank and Ida.” The video profiles an older married couple as they age from 65 to 85.   Dr. Oscar Alvarez from Calvary Hospital in Bronx, NY delivered the key note presentation “Palliative and Curative Wound Care: Principles and Practice.” Other presenters were Todd Goldberg, MD, Michael Robie, DO, Rachel Dispennette, PharmD, Cynthia Farley, RN, and Vickie Powell, MSN, FNP-BC.
